CANCELED: Intro to Episodic Storytelling (Free)

Join us for a free preview of our upcoming Episodic Storytelling workshop with filmmaker and Sidewalk alumna Malerie Grady! Malerie is the writer and producer of “Tough Love,” a webseries about the misfortunes of queer dating which screened at Outfest and Sidewalk in 2019.

Malerie will be hosting a longer, more detailed workshop on April 5th with us – if you can’t make this one, make plans to join us on April 5!

This free seminar will take place in the classroom.

Sidewalk’s educational programs are sponsored by Wind Creek Hospitality.

November Salon: Media Literacy

Join us for our FREE monthly salon! We’ll discuss media literacy with Sidewalk Creative Director Rachel Morgan and Dr. Teddy Champion of Birmingham-Southern College. Additional panelists coming soon. Join us for mingling and networking from 6-7 in the cinema bar/lounge area and the discussion portion from 7-8 in the classroom space.

Keep in mind, outside food or drink is not allowed in the cinema. You may purchase concessions from our concession stand and take them anywhere you want inside our cinema space, but if you’d like anything besides that, we recommend arriving early and visiting one of our neighbors in the food hall upstairs if you’d like something else.

Thank you to Wind Creek Hospitality for sponsoring all of Sidewalk’s education programs!

Congratulations to our Spooky Scramble Winners!

This past Wednesday, we screened films made during the Spooky Scramble – a 48-hour filmmaking competition held here in Birmingham. Participating teams had to write, direct, and edit films and submit them to us within 48 hours. Each team received a random horror sub-genre that their film had to fit into, a spooky prop (in this case, a small bendable skeleton) they had to incorporate, and a line of dialogue they had to use (The Shining’s famous line, “Here’s Johnny”).

The audience award winners receive $500 and automatic acceptance into Sidewalk Film Festival 2019. The jury award winners receive $1,000 and automatic acceptance into Sidewalk Film Festival 2019.

The jury for the Scramble consisted of Sidewalk programmer Corey Craft, horror screenwriter Jeremy Burgess, local filmmaker Chance Shirley, and Birth.Movies.Death. writer Justin Harrison.

Below is the complete list of winners and a link to the Youtube playlist of the films (films accepted into the festival are not online as per our submission requirements).

We host two scrambles a year. If you missed your chance to participate in this one or want to try your luck for the top prize one more time, we’ll have another scramble in February 2019. We’ll post details about registration for that as they become available.

Spooky Scramble

Come join us for our fall scramble, a 48-hour filmmaking competition! Great if you want to learn how to make a movie or if you’re already a seasoned filmmaker looking for a fun, quick project. We will post kickoff event location and screening date/time info here as it becomes available. Final films will be 5 minutes long.

Kickoff event will be October 12th at 7 PM at Birmingham Festival Theater.
