A Conversation with John Sayles and Maggie Renzi
Join writer/director John Sayles and producer Maggie Renzi for an intimate conversation of their filmmaking collaboration, which has spanned more than two decades and created such critically acclaimed independent films as THE BROTHER FROM ANOTHER PLANET, MATEWAN, PASSION FISH, LONE STAR, and LIMBO. Their latest film, HONEYDRIPPER, is being produced in Greenville, Alabama this fall. Moderated by Steve Burch, Asst. Professor, University of Alabama, Dept. of Theatre and Dance.

Low-Budget Film Scoring and the Music of THE GUATEMALAN HANDSHAKE
David Wingo (GEORGE WASHINGTON, ALL THE REAL GIRLS, UNDERTOW) discusses his approach to film scoring with examples of his work, including Todd Rohal's Sidewalk 2006 feature, THE GUATEMALAN HANDSHAKE. David will talk about working on a shoe-string budget, composing collaboratively over the internet, and how musicians can get their break creating music for film. David will perform live in the Sidewalk Music Café at 8 pm, Sat. 9/23.

Your Money or Your Life
Molly Mayeux, producer of the Sidewalk 2004 feature DANDELION, moderates this panel of Sidewalk filmmakers for an in-depth discussion of the fundraising and financing methods used to get their projects off the ground, in the can, and on the screen. Panelists include: Nathaniel Kohn (SOMEBODIES), Todd Rohal (THE GUATEMALAN HANDSHAKE).

The Subject’s Reality: THE TRIALS OF DARRYL HUNT
After the 4:15 pm screening of THE TRIALS OF DARRYL HUNT, do not miss this unique opportunity to hear from Darryl Hunt, Mark Rabil, and Larry Little. Get a comprehensive understanding of the causes and consequences of wrongful convictions, and criminal justice reform. Moderated by Michele Forman.

Screenwriting Panel
Alison Bagnall (PIGGIE, BUFFALO '66) moderates this panel of Sidewalk 2006 writer/directors, including Hadjii (SOMEBODIES), Amanda Gusack (IN MEMORIUM), Pete Marcy (FIREFLY) and Lynn Shelton (WE GO WAY BACK) as they walk through the screenwriting process. Among the topics to be discussed are how to get started, developing characters, registering your work and how to get your screenplay form page to screen.
2:30 pm - 4 pm
Alabama in a Hurricane: Shooting HEAVENS FALL
The first theatrical feature about the Scottsboro Boys, HEAVENS FALL was shooting in Monroeville, Alabama when hurricane Ivan struck the area. Mark Stricklin, of the Birmingham-Jefferson Film Office, moderates this panel with writer/director Terry Green, producer Anna Marie Crovetti and Tommy Fell from the Alabama Film Office for a look at the film's production. Hear how the project came together, and how the hurricane impacted the production and the people involved. HEAVENS FALL is Sidewalk’s Closing Night Film and screens after the panel, at 5 pm at the Alabama Theatre.
