| DANIELSON: A FAMILY MOVIE (103 min.) directed by JL Aronson * Director JL Aronson is scheduled to attend. DANIELSON: A FAMILY MOVIE is a documentary about unbridled creativity vs. accessibility, Christian faith vs. popular culture, underground music vs. survival, and family vs. individuality. The film follows Daniel Smith, an eccentric musician and visual artist, as he leads his four siblings and best friend to indie rock stardom, eventually facing the struggle to become viable as a solo act. Along the way he mentors Sufjan Stevens, a then unknown singer-songwriter whose own subsequent success stands in stark contrast to the music world's uneasy reception of Danielson just a few years prior. Collage, direct cinema, animation and memorable performances all contribute to this independently-produced spectacle. Director Bio: JL Aronson graduated from UC Santa Cruz in political theory and media studies. He is an adjunct professor at NYU, teaching documentary film in the SCPS program. His writings have appeared in Time Out New York, Village Voice, CMJ and other media outlets. He has also made documentaries about underground karaoke, pigeon breeders and gentrification. His experimental films include "Senior Picture," distributed on the Kill Rock Stars "Starter Set" DVD. |
